Bio: Joe started listening to metal religiously somewhere around 1998, after growing up with the glam and grunge of the mid-late 90s. It wasn’t long afterward that he began learning the guitar, having been greatly inspired by bands like COF, Dimmu, Old Man’s Child, Immortal, Emperor, etc… He remembers purchasing the “Blackened II” compilation at Minnesota’s very own Rootcellar Records, which opened his eyes to an entire new world of music. He was hooked.

He had moved to Illinois from Minnesota in 1997. After devoting several years to learning the guitar, he managed to land himself in a band with some of his high school buddies in 2004. This project became his first band, Blutige Nacht. The band released a short demo in 2004, two EPs (2006 and 2008), and they really hit their stride in 2011 with the full-length release of “Scorn.” All of the music is still available for free at Last.fm for anyone who might be interested.

Blutige Nacht played several shows in the Chicagoland area, and Joe will always hold those memories close to heart. He could reminisce for a long time about the great shows and bad ass bands that he was granted a chance to share the stage with. A few include: Cardiac Arrest, Life in Shadow, Altered Existence, They Die Screaming, En Masse, and Screaming Entombment. Many of these bands either have or have had NYDM members; these shows and people marked Joe’s introduction, and ultimately his acceptance into, the NYDM.

After graduating college in 2012, Joe decided that he wanted to move back to Minnesota to be closer to his family. Sadly, this meant that he would no longer be able to perform with Blutige Nacht. It also meant that he would need to get acquainted with an entirely new metal community and NYDM chapter. He was thrilled to be welcomed back to his hometown with open arms by so many; it continues to mean the world to him.

After a few fruitless auditions and a short-lived project with Rob Blake, Joe managed to be at the right place at the right time in October 2015. Acanthostega had just finished playing a set, and he learned that their guitarist was leaving the band. Not wanting to waste the opportunity to play in a group so that was so stylistically close to his roots, he immediately offered to audition. Eight months later, he is a full-fledged member of Acanthostega. It’s been a blast for Joe to learn their material and write new songs. He is looking forward to the many shows to come, as well as the opportunity to do some more recording!

2016 marks Joe’s 6th year in NYDM, and he continues to feel the same love, loyalty, purpose, and RESPECT that drew him to the familia in the first place.
