Chris has been lucky in that his father is also into metal. Bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Dio, and Black Sabbath influenced his formative years. His metal journey has become heavier and darker over time. He found himself involved in the Des Moines music scene in the late 90’s. He went into CD shops to get flyers and hit up shows. Eventually, he found himself on street teams, handing out flyers for various local bands.
He worked at several radio rock shows when he first started in the music industry. He was like a sponge, soaking up the finer points of how to properly load expensive drum kits and guitar rigs that he’d never be able to afford. Then, one day, there came a show offer for Cannibal Corpse. Immediately he yelled, “Book this or I fucking quit!” He knew that once booked, similar shows would be pitched, thus breaking free of the bonds of radio rock. In no time, he was working shows that he actually wanted to attend. In 2008 he created No Surrender Productions and in 2009 he became stage manager for The Blvd Agency. From 2010-2011 he helped Metro Concerts Live come into being.
He eventually met Randy Kastner, and in 2012 was convinced to go to the Annual in St. Paul, MN. He saw that the event was handled professionally and about halfway through the first day he knew he wanted to be involved with the club. After the first month of prospecting, he was amazed to learn how vast the club was, seeing chapters had been established worldwide. Being used to doing everything on his own; suddenly having a support network was great. The common goal to improve and secure the longevity of metal is what really made him want to be a part of NYDM at first, but the more he got to know everyone, the more we became like an extended family.
